ダイアン・アーバスが1971年に48歳の若さでなくなった時、世界的に知られるイメージは数えるほどだけだったのにも関わらず、彼女はすでに写真界において大きな影響を持つ人物となっていた。このモノグラフは1972年、彼女の死の直後にMoMAから出版された。
80の作品を収録したこの本は、アーバスの友人である画家のマービン・イスラエルと、彼女の娘ドーン・アーバスがデザインをしており、アーバスの作品に対する判断やどのように作品を見せたいかという基準を忠実に残す事を意図して制作された。約50年という歳月が経った今も色あせることなく心を突き刺し、世界の見方を変えてしまう。
