エレン・ギャラガーの絵は、20世紀半ばの黒人紙から集めた396人のポートレートを再構成してから始まる。彼女はそれらのポートレートに切り目を入れ、工作粘土かウィッグでその個性を作り上げていく。古文書と気まぐれの二つの組み合わせは、死角を作り、読みやすさにギャップを生みだすことで世俗的な障害の度合いを意識させる。これらの障害の混乱を私たちは本書を通して思惑を含めた歴史的な観点から見ていくことができる。本書では、無常が常にあることを示し、私たちはそこへ徴兵されたのだと感じるだろう。
