この本では、もっとも美術史的なモデルである狭い西洋中道主義に挑んでいる。考古学者は、すべての人間の文化は何万年もかけて、視覚的な描写や表現への熱望を共有してきたことを発見した。今なお、美術史の研究は伝統的に、過去数世紀の西洋のアートワークに焦点を充てている。この本では、美術に関する展望を独自の視点で徹底的にまとめたり、神経科学・進化生物学・人類学・地理学などの研究からアプローチを借りて、文化的・包括的・時間的な観点の境界を超えて美術の現象を探索する。
音楽学や言語学では、熟考やリサーチにおいてそうした多様性に富む観点を用いることは、正常なプロセスの一部と考えられる。その精神において、この本では論証や調査の具体的方法を検証するためにケーススタディを用いて、抽象的なモデルまで及ぶ。
